Is the Shibumi Shade the best in the world?
What is a Shibumi Shade?
The Shibumi Shade is the product of 2 brothers (Dane & Scott) and 1 best friend (Alex) genius idea stemming from frustration and the hassle of tents and flimsy umbrellas. The trio made countless trips to the hardware store and many late nights designing, sewing, and testing. Finally, after a year-long process, the Shibumi Shade was born and is now spread across multiple US beaches. The Shibumi Shade was conceptualized and produced in the hometown of North Carolina.
What’s in a name?
“Shibumi” is a design concept defined by effortless perfection. We feel this description fits perfectly with what we hoped to achieve with the Shibumi Shade – a distinctive design that works effortlessly with the wind to create the perfect beach shade.
Shibumi also represents a common thread for the three of us, as it happens to be the name of the small apartment complex each of us lived in during our years in Chapel Hill while attending UNC (Dane & Alex ’09, Scott’ 12).
The Shibumi Shade Design
The Shibumi Shade is a large piece of fabric held in place by a single flexible metal frame stuck in the sand, providing shade under the canopy. The metal frame is separated into several pieces for easy storage. The canopy is sewn together in two distinct blue and teal colors that attach to the metal frame threaded like a curtain on a rod. The canopy is free-flowing with the wind and is anchored in place by filling the carrying bag with sand. As little as 3 mph of wind will keep the canopy floating comfortably.
The Shibumi Shade provides enough shade for six people and accompanying beach gear. In addition, the shade can be set up and taken down by one person. The shade blocks 97% of harmful rays or UPF 30 sun protection.
Specifications of the Shibumi Shade

How easy is it to maintain your Shibumi Shade
First, tap the san out of the metal frame and rinse with fresh water when you get home. Make sure to let the frame dry completely. Second, rinse the canopy off and allow it to dry completely. Finally, make sure to brush the excess sand out of the storage bag. Now you are ready to slide the metal frame inside the storage bag, stuff the canopy in, secure the toggle, and put it away until next time.
Where can you buy a Shibumi Shade?
You can get your Shibumi Shade from ShibumiShade.com for $250.00, or I found mine at my local ACE Hardware.
Is the Shibumi Shade worth the high price?
Living in Northeast Florida and a frequent visitor to my local beach (the Jetty’s), the Shibumi Shade is worth the price. The canopy provides enough shade for several people and all of your beach necessities. In addition, the shade eliminates the need for multiple umbrellas and baby covers. It was easy for us to set up, adjust, and takedown. We didn’t waste valuable time fighting with an umbrella or heavy tent. We set up and put away the shade in less than 4 minutes. Yes, I timed it.
In my personal opinion, yes, the Shibumi Shade is well worth the price tag of $250.00 I give the Shibumi Shade a 10/10
