How Many Pieces Do You Need In A Capsule Wardrobe
That will depend on the person and activities. Since I work a full-time job and live minutes from the beach, and love working in the garden, I may require a few more than the average person. However, I can opt for a casual capsule wardrobe and add pieces that would work for business.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of carefully curated pieces of clothing, shoes, and accessories that work together to make up multiple outfits. Incorporating a capsule wardrobe reduces decision fatigue and helps you live a simpler life.
A good rule of thumb is between 30 and 50 total pieces. However, the number is not as significant as how your curated wardrobe makes you feel. The Penny Hoarder writes, “According to internet fashion folklore, the term “capsule wardrobe” was referenced by a London boutique owner named Susie Faux. Back in the ’70s, she made it her mission to help women find their personal style by honing and focusing on their wardrobes. Finally, she found a magic formula that just seemed to work in doing this. She would instruct her clients to start with the classic, neutral basics to mix, match and reuse, throw in a few statement pieces to inject some personality, and leave a little wiggle room to bring in seasonal or on-trend items once in a while. And just like that, the capsule wardrobe was born.”
What are the benefits of a capsule wardrobe?
Building a capsule wardrobe can help with saving money, minimalism, less worry, and a general feeling of freedom.
So let’s keep it simple.
There is no need to add unnecessary stress to our life over building a wardrobe. Instead, it should be fun and exciting. So play dress up and enjoy the process.
Before you can build a good foundation, you need to start with a total clearout. I suggest the KonMari method. I will have a link below to the website. Start by putting all of your clothes on your bed. Then, touch each piece and sort it into four piles: love, like, donate (then sell), and trash (recycle). Now is the time to be brutely honest with yourself about the items you decide to keep.
Start with donating and selling:
- Look at each piece and if they are in good condition, decide to donate or sell.
- Please take all of your donated items, bag them, and put them in your car.
- For the things you have decided to sell, set them aside for photoing and listing.
Next, all items in the like pile:
- Look at each piece, and if you haven’t worn it in the last six months or you wouldn’t wear it tomorrow in public, it should be donated or sold.
- If you decide you love it and would wear it, then place it in the love pile.
Finally, the love pile:
- Look over each piece. If it needs repair, go ahead and take care of it; if there is a spot, treat and launder it.
- Put the item back in the closet.
After you have cleared out your closet and have only the pieces you love and feel amazing in, let’s look at what we have. There should be at least one piece in each of the 12 categories.
12 Categories to include
- Pants
- Jeans
- Dresses
- Skirts
- Tees
- Blouse/nice top
- Sweater
- Blazer/Cardigan
- Swim/Outerwear
- Shoes
- Jewelry
- Accessories (sunglass, handbags, totes, etc.)
Decide on your neutral color pallet and one signature or favorite color from your current pieces.
For example, I prefer black, tan/beige, white, blue, and blush in the cooler months. Navy, white, tan/beige, blush, and blue for the warmer months.
Next, see how many outfits you can make from what you currently have.
Finally, make a list of items you need to complete any outfit. When adding to your wardrobe, make sure to invest in quality pieces. Don’t forget places like Goodwill, Poshmark, and Mercari for original quality pieces.
Now you can decide on how you would like to proceed.
You can build a wardrobe based on seasons, a whole year, 30 items, etc. the choice is yours. Just have fun with it.
A capsule wardrobe is an excellent opportunity to hone your style and how you want to express yourself. But remember to keep it fun. There is no real wrong way to decide on your capsule wardrobe.
